Since 2022, JNBY has embarked on a dedicated research journey into traditional craft materials, deconstructing every weave to reimagine its infinite design possibilities.We wanted to trace our steps back to where a garment truly begins - and honor the human stories spun into the cloth.It starts with a single thread and the hands that guide it. We follow its passage: how raw fibers are spun into textile, how living colors take root and patterns emerge, and how ancient techniques adorn, connect, and transform fabric into form.

In our search for traditional textiles, we found ourselves documenting something far deeper: the people, their living traditions, and their relationship with the craft.

Nestled deep within a quiet, misty valley lies Dali Village - a place with over 600 years of history.
Here, the gentle pulse of ancient agrarian life remains remarkably untouched. Winding natural streams, cascading rice terraces, hand-built timber homes clinging to the hillside, and time-honored hand-weaving traditions weave together a self-sufficient world. In Dali, life moves in harmony with the land, providing everything needed for clothing, nourishment, and shelter.
The Dong People & Their Textiles
During the farming season, the steady, rhythmic echo of wooden mallets striking cloth wakes the village - a gentle heartbeat that marks the start of each day.
The Dong women bring their dyed fabrics down to the river to be rinsed. The iconic deep indigo garments they wear are born from a labor of love, enduring tens of cycles of indigo dyeing, river washing, sun drying, and meticulous hand-thumping.
In the afternoon, when the sun reaches its peak, some women return indoors to sit at their wooden looms. For them, the rhythmic rocking of the weaver’s shuttle is a cherished form of rest.
The lives of Dong women flow smoothly between three simple pursuits: farming, weaving, and singing. Farming nourishes the body, singing comforts the soul, and weaving bridges the space between the two.
Line by line, thread by thread, these quiet acts of craftsmanship weave through their daily lives - forming the very warp and weft of a existence filled with warmth, hope, and deep-rooted emotion.
THE CROSS-WEAVING PATTERN ARCHIVE
In collaboration with Rong Design Library, The Textile Possibility Proejct is a five-year initiative bridging traditional craftsmanship with modern design. Each year, immersive field research across China feeds into an annual report - a living archive that uncovers the hidden geometry, cultural meanings, and master skills woven into traditional textile patterns.
